How to fold an origami fortune teller
Two rounds of corners-to-centre with a flip in between, then pop it open with your fingers. Write numbers and fortunes under the flaps to play.
You need: 1 square sheet, 15 × 15 cm or larger. Medium, 9 steps, about 5 minutes.
Steps
- Crease a diagonal. Fold corner to corner, crease well, then unfold.
- Crease the other diagonal. Repeat with the other two corners. The creases cross at the centre.
- Corners to the centre. Fold all four corners in so their tips meet at the centre.
- Turn it over. Flip the square over so the flaps face down.
- Corners to the centre again. Fold the four new corners to the centre one more time.
- Crease in half. Fold in half, crease well, then unfold.
- Crease the other way. Fold in half the other way, crease, then unfold.
- Pop it open. Slide your thumbs and first fingers into the four pockets underneath, then push the corners up and together.
- Open and close. Spread your fingers to open it one way, close it, then pull your hands apart to open it the other way.
Ready to play!
Pick a colour, spell it out as you open and close, then read the fortune under the number you land on.
How to play
- Colour the four outer squares (or write a colour name on each). Write a number on each of the eight triangles inside, then lift the flaps and write a fortune under each number.
- A friend picks a colour. Spell it out, opening the fortune teller one way, then the other, once per letter.
- They pick a number they can see inside. Open and close it that many times.
- They pick a number once more. Lift that flap and read out their fortune.
